IDF says strike in Gaza City killed two Hamas engineering unit operatives

The Israeli military said it carried out a strike in the Gaza City area on Sunday that killed two men it identified as operatives in the engineering unit of Hamas' military wing. In a statement issued by the IDF spokesperson, the army named them as Hassan Ali Abu Nada and Abd al-Rahim Ahmad Khalil Khawa.

According to the same statement, the two men had recently been involved in the production and development of weapons, in what the army called advanced attacks against Israeli soldiers and civilians, and in efforts to rebuild the capabilities of Hamas. The military said in a post on X that those activities amounted to a systematic violation of the ceasefire, and that the men were killed in order to remove the threat they posed.

What the IDF spokesperson's unit is

The IDF, the Israel Defense Forces, is the country's military. Its spokesperson's unit issues operational announcements in Hebrew, English, Arabic and other languages, and publishes them on Telegram, on X and through a press distribution list. Strike announcements of this kind, naming individuals and describing their alleged roles, are the army's standard format for explaining a targeted killing. They are the military's own account of an operation and are not, on their own, independently confirmed.

Where the strike took place

Gaza City sits in the northern part of the Gaza Strip and is the territory's largest urban area. The army's wording, the Gaza City area, is broader than a named neighbourhood or street, and the statement does not narrow the location further. It also does not describe the type of munition used, whether the strike was carried out by aircraft or by another means, or what the target structure was.

What an engineering unit does

In the Israeli military's terminology, the engineering unit of Hamas' military wing refers to the part of the organisation responsible for weapons manufacture and development, explosive devices and related technical work. The military wing of Hamas is the armed branch of the movement that has governed Gaza. Israel, the United States, the European Union and other governments designate Hamas as a terrorist organisation. In its statement the army used the word terrorists to describe the two men; that is the military's characterisation, and Israel.com reports it as such.

The ceasefire reference

The army's post on X placed the strike in the context of a ceasefire, saying the men's activity violated it systematically. The two statements do not set out the terms of that ceasefire, when it took effect, which parties are bound by it or what mechanism exists for adjudicating alleged breaches. Nor do they say whether the strike was presented to any mediator or monitor in advance. Readers following the conflict from outside the region should note that the ceasefire framing is the military's own, and the reports here contain no comment from Hamas, from Palestinian authorities in Gaza or from any third party on whether the strike itself was consistent with that arrangement.

Two statements, one source

The Telegram announcement and the X post are both from the IDF and carry the same core claims: the same two names, the same unit, the same stated justification. The Telegram version specifies that the strike happened earlier the same day, a Sunday, and that it was in the Gaza City area. The X version adds the ceasefire wording. The two do not contradict each other. Because both come from the same body, this is a single-source account rather than a corroborated one, and no other organisation's reporting was available in the material behind this article.

What the reports do not say

Neither statement gives a time for the strike, only that it happened earlier in the day. Neither gives the ages of the two men, how long they were said to have been in the engineering unit, or what evidence underlies the claim that they developed weapons. There is no account of casualties beyond the two named men: the statements do not say whether anyone else was present, injured or killed, and they do not describe damage to surrounding buildings.

There is also no independent confirmation from Palestinian health authorities, from journalists in Gaza or from international bodies of who was killed or where. The attacks the army says the two men were involved in are not dated or described in any detail, and the phrase attempted to reconstitute the organisation's capabilities is not explained further. The army does not say whether the two were struck together or in separate incidents, nor whether they were the intended targets from the outset. Until other bodies report on the same strike, everything above rests on the military's account.
