IDF says strike killed Hamas military security commander in Gaza City

The term used by the IDF, Hamas's Military Security Department, refers to an internal security arm within the group's armed wing rather than one of its territorial combat units. The IDF placed Badawi within the Gaza City Brigade, one of the regional formations into which Hamas's military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, is organised. Gaza City is the largest urban centre in the northern Gaza Strip and has been a focus of Israeli operations throughout the war.

That is the same claim the military made in its own channels, and none of the reports offer independent corroboration of it.

The second name, and how it is spelled

The reports differ on the second man's name. The IDF's English-language post on X rendered it as Momon Saeed Mohammed Hawari, while the statement circulated on the military's Telegram channel gave Momo Saeed Mohammed Hawari. Fabian wrote it as Momen Saeed Mohammed Al-Hawari. The variation is the kind that arises when Arabic names are transliterated into English by different hands, and the material does not establish which form is correct. All accounts agree he was described only as a Hamas operative, with no role or unit attached.

How announcements like this usually work

The IDF routinely publishes the names and claimed roles of Palestinian operatives it says it has killed, often after an interval, and distributes them simultaneously in Hebrew, English and Arabic across Telegram and X. Those statements are the primary and frequently the only public account of such strikes. Hamas does not always confirm the identities or roles the military assigns, and the Gaza health authorities count casualties without reference to affiliation. In this case, the material contains no Palestinian response of any kind.

What the reports do not say

Several basic points remain open. The reports do not give the precise location of the strike within Gaza, beyond the brigade designation attached to Badawi. Nor is there any information on why the announcement followed the strike by some days, or on what evidence the IDF relies for its claim that the pair were preparing attacks.
