IDF says strike killed Hamas operative Farah Hamed, freed in Shalit deal

Israeli security forces said they killed Farah Hamed, described as an operative in the military wing of Hamas, in an air strike in the Gaza Strip. The killing was announced in a joint statement issued by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson on behalf of the military, the Israel Security Agency (ISA, the domestic intelligence service also known as the Shin Bet) and the Israel Police.

According to the joint announcement published by the IDF spokesperson, Hamed had previously served as a senior operative in what the Israeli military calls the "West Bank Headquarters" of Hamas, and had taken part in fighting against Israeli troops. A parallel English posting on the IDF's account on X said he was responsible for multiple deadly attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers, carried out several attacks in the Binyamin area of the West Bank in which Israeli civilians were killed, and took part in the October 2003 shooting attack in Ein Yabrud, in which 3 IDF soldiers were killed.

Where the accounts differ on place and timing

The official Israeli statement placed the strike in the central Gaza Strip and said it took place the previous day, a Wednesday. The Hebrew-language monitoring channel Abu Ali Express, which tracks Arabic-language media and Palestinian sources, reported a different location and timeframe, citing Gazan sources: a strike on a motorcycle on al-Rashid Street in the western part of Gaza City, earlier the same day the channel posted.

The two descriptions are not reconciled in the material available. Al-Rashid Street is the coastal road running along the length of the Gaza Strip, which means a strike on it could be described in more than one way depending on the exact point. What the "West Bank Headquarters" refers to

Israeli security bodies use the term to describe the arm of Hamas that directs activity in the West Bank from outside it, including from the Gaza Strip and from abroad. Abu Ali Express reported that Hamed was 43 years old, that he was among the leaders of a cell from Silwad in the Ramallah district, that he was released in the Shalit deal in 2011, and that he was deported to the Gaza Strip as part of that release. The Shalit deal was the prisoner exchange in which Israel freed a large number of Palestinian prisoners in return for Gilad Shalit, the Israeli soldier who had been held captive in Gaza. A portion of those released were barred from returning to their homes in the West Bank and were sent instead to Gaza or abroad, a condition that has since featured repeatedly in Israeli accounts of senior Hamas figures operating from the territory.

The IDF statement on X likewise said Hamed had been apprehended and released, though the text available to us is cut off before the sentence is completed. The age, the hometown, the identification of the cell and the explicit reference to the exchange appear only in the Abu Ali Express report and are not in the official Israeli announcement.

How this fits the pattern of Israeli announcements

Joint statements from the IDF, the ISA and the Israel Police are the standard format Israel uses when it announces the killing of a named individual it links to attacks inside Israel or the West Bank, as distinct from purely battlefield strikes announced by the military alone. The inclusion of the police typically signals that the case file on the individual involves criminal investigations of attacks on civilians.

What the reports do not say

None of the material gives the precise time of the strike, the munition used, or how the target was identified. There is no casualty figure beyond the named individual, and no indication in the reports of whether anyone else was hurt.
