IDF's 210th Division wraps up readiness exercise in the Golan Heights

The Israel Defense Forces said its 210th Division has finished an advanced exercise in the Golan Heights and along the border with Syria, designed to raise operational readiness and keep units able to respond to sudden and complex incidents. According to the IDF spokesperson, the drill involved the whole of the division's troops together with supporting forces from neighbouring areas, and covered what the military described as dozens of different scenarios and the management of emergencies.

Israeli broadcasters reported the same exercise on the morning it was announced. N12's Nitzan Shapira reported that the forces practised the rescue and evacuation of wounded personnel, mass-casualty incidents, the activation of standby forces and coordination with emergency bodies and civilian authorities, and that the military said lessons from October 7 had been built into the exercise. Ynet reported the same core elements, describing the drill as including casualty rescue and mass-casualty events.

What the 210th Division is

The 210th Division is the Israeli army's regional formation responsible for the Golan Heights sector and the frontier with Syria. Israeli divisions of this type are territorial commands: they hold a defined stretch of border, oversee the regular and reserve units deployed in it, and are the body that would manage the opening hours of any incident there, from an infiltration attempt to an exchange of fire. Exercises like this one are the mechanism by which such a division tests whether its command posts, its medical chain and its standby units can function together under pressure.

Where the Golan Heights is

The Golan Heights is the plateau in Israel's north east, rising above the Sea of Galilee and looking out towards Syrian territory. Israel captured the area from Syria in the Six Day War and later extended Israeli law to it, a step not recognised by most of the international community. It is home to Israeli towns and farming communities as well as a Druze population, and its position means that any change on the Syrian side of the line is felt quickly on the Israeli side. Practising it means running the medical chain from the point of injury back to hospitals, and testing whether the division can keep fighting while doing so.

The reference to standby forces, in Hebrew kitot konenut style readiness units and army reserve elements held at short notice, points to the same concern: how fast an organised response can be assembled when an incident begins without warning. The stated cooperation with emergency bodies and civil authorities means police, ambulance and municipal actors, who in the Golan would be dealing with the same event from the civilian side.

The October 7 element

N12 reported that the military said the exercise incorporated lessons from October 7, the date of the Hamas-led assault on communities and army positions in southern Israel. Since then the IDF has repeatedly framed training around scenarios that begin suddenly, involve simultaneous attacks on multiple points, and require local commanders to act before reinforcements arrive. The published material does not spell out which specific conclusions were applied in the Golan exercise, only that lessons were embedded.

What the reports do not say

None of the accounts give the exercise's duration, the number of soldiers involved, or the names of the units that took part beyond the division itself and unspecified supporting forces from nearby areas. The IDF statement refers to dozens of scenarios without listing them, and no source quantifies the simulated casualties or identifies which hospitals or emergency organisations participated.

The reports also do not describe any operational trigger for the drill, and do not link it to any particular development on the Syrian side of the border.
