A $350,000 Order Sends Israeli Anti-Drone AI to US Trials

Axon Vision, an Israeli defence technology company based in Tel Aviv, has received an order worth $350,000 from the American firm Leonardo DRS for its new artificial intelligence-driven counter-unmanned aerial systems, the company said in an announcement issued from Jerusalem on 13 January 2026. Counter-unmanned aerial systems, usually abbreviated to C-UAS, are the equipment used to spot and stop hostile drones.

According to the announcement, the initial delivery will provide end-to-end detection, classification, tracking and interception of aerial threats in support of US defence and homeland security forces. The order follows a strategic partnership signed in late 2025 and will see the systems assessed in live operational exercises on both manned and unmanned platforms. Axon Vision, whose artificial intelligence products are used by the Israeli military, said the US market is a key growth focus for 2026.

Why an order this size matters more than its value

By defence procurement standards $350,000 is a very small number. What it buys is position. EDR Magazine reported on 12 January 2026 that the system is designed as a modular last line of defence with standard military integration interfaces, completing the detection-to-interception chain in under a second, and that the systems would be evaluated on manned and unmanned ground platforms to validate emerging counter-drone and mobile force-protection concepts. Chief executive Roy Riftin said the order deepened the collaboration with Leonardo DRS.

The Jerusalem Post reported that Axon Vision was founded in 2017 by veterans of Israeli military technology units, that it recently completed an initial public offering on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange raising $26m, and that the partnership pairs Leonardo DRS's sensing and systems integration work with Axon Vision's perception and threat-classification software.

The American problem this is aimed at

Small drones have moved from novelty to standing headache for the US military. DefenseScoop reported on 26 January 2026 that drone incursions over American military installations had increased considerably in recent years and that a Defense Department inspector general review found confused policies had left some facilities unable to defend themselves properly. It reported that Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth signed guidance in December 2025 expanding the areas commanders may defend around their bases, treating unauthorised drone surveillance as a threat, and allowing sensor data to be shared between federal agencies, with an Army-led joint task force established to spread counter-drone capability.

That is the demand signal behind a small evaluation order: an American prime contractor testing whether a foreign software layer can be dropped into its own hardware.

An export sector running hot

Israeli defence sales have been climbing for years. The Israeli Ministry of Defense reported in February 2026 that exports reached $19.2bn in 2025, close to 30% up on the previous year and more than double the level of five years earlier, with North America accounting for 13% of the total and Europe 36%. Missile, rocket and air defence systems made up the largest single category at 29%.

What is still unclear

The announcement did not say how many systems the order covers, when they will be delivered, or where the evaluations will be held. It did not name a US customer beyond Leonardo DRS itself, and gave no indication of what a follow-on production order might be worth or when a decision on one might be taken. It also did not describe how the system intercepts a drone once it has been detected.
