Golani Sergeant Uri Greenberg, 21, Killed in Lebanon Firefight

The Israel Defense Forces cleared for publication the death of Sgt. Uri Greenberg, 21, a soldier in the reconnaissance unit of the Golani Brigade, who was killed in a close-range clash with fighters in southern Lebanon. Greenberg was from Petah Tikva, a city of about 270,000 people some ten kilometres east of Tel Aviv, and was the third Israeli soldier killed since the start of renewed ground operations in southern Lebanon.

According to an initial IDF account, the clash happened at about 2.10 a.m., when Golani patrol troops identified several Hezbollah operatives in the area where they were working. The soldiers engaged them at close quarters. Greenberg was killed in the exchange of fire; another soldier was very lightly wounded and did not need evacuation. The remaining troops returned fire and killed several of the attackers, and the military said searches were continuing for others. Petah Tikva's mayor, Rami Greenberg, said in a statement that the soldier was “one of the best sons of Petah Tikva, a brave fighter in regular service, who went out to protect us all and never returned”, and that the city bowed its head with his memory.

The brigade and its reconnaissance troops

Golani is one of the IDF's oldest infantry formations, raised on 22 February 1948 and long associated with Israel's northern borders. Its reconnaissance element is a volunteer force selected by demanding trials and used for missions beyond the border, according to a reference history of the brigade, which also traces its part in the 1967 and 1973 wars, the Entebbe rescue and successive Lebanon operations. Reconnaissance troops are the units most likely to be moving on foot in contested ground at two in the morning, which is the kind of work the IDF account describes.

A war that resumed three weeks earlier

The ground operations Greenberg died in had begun only weeks before. Cross-border fire resumed on 2 March 2026 and Israeli troops were deployed into southern Lebanon the following day, with the military describing its positions along the frontier as a forward defence, according to a timeline of the 2026 Lebanon war. The intensity on the day of his death can be measured from Times of Israel live coverage of 26 March 2026, which recorded more than 100 Hezbollah rockets fired at Israel over the course of the day, sirens in Haifa and the Galilee, further Israeli air strikes inside Iran, and other Israeli casualties on the Lebanese front.

The rest of the day's casualty list

The IDF released a wider tally of injuries alongside the announcement. Twenty soldiers had been wounded in various engagements over the previous 24 hours, it said, including one seriously hurt by a mortar shell fired at forces inside Lebanon; an officer and two other soldiers were lightly injured in the same incident. In a separate overnight incident a combat officer was moderately wounded by shrapnel from friendly fire and evacuated for treatment. Fifteen soldiers were taken to hospital with hypothermia during operations in southern Lebanon, one in moderate condition and the rest, including an officer, in mild condition. The military also said a reservist had been seriously wounded by rocket fire on the Wednesday, with a battalion commander and another soldier lightly hurt. All the wounded were evacuated to hospital and their families informed.

What is still unclear

The IDF did not say where in southern Lebanon the clash took place, how many operatives were involved, or how many were killed beyond “several”. It did not name the other soldiers wounded, and it did not say whether the friendly-fire incident was under investigation. The account is the military's initial one and it noted that searches were continuing.
