Ethnix brought Middle Eastern melodies into Israeli pop and rock from their first single in 1989
Ethnix is an Israeli band that blends new wave, pop and rock with Middle Eastern melodies. It grew out of Moskva, the band in which singer Ze'ev Nehama and keyboard player Tamir Kaliski had played since 1985, and its first single, Ein Le'an Lalechet, came out in September 1989.
The hits came fast: Tzipor Midbar in 1990, then the albums Masala (1991), with its title song sung with Zehava Ben, Yelalat Tan (1992), with Tutim, and Adam V'Nahash (1993), with Jessica, Reshet Gimel's song of the year. Ethnix has been named band of the year eight times, more than any other band in Israel.
In the late 1990s Nehama and Kaliski wrote and produced three albums for Eyal Golan on the band's own label, Sultan, starting with Bil'adayich (1997), an album credited with bringing Mediterranean music into the mainstream. In 2025 Ethnix, with Gal Hadani on drums and guitarists Yoram Poizner and Gilad Pasternak, released Italia, their first album in eight years.
