Gad Elmaleh brought American-style stand-up to France, then took it to America

Gad Elmaleh was born in Casablanca in 1971 and studied in Montreal before moving to Paris in 1992 to study drama at the Cours Florent. In 1997 he staged his first one-man show, Décalages.

His one-man shows La Vie Normale, L'autre c'est moi and Papa est en haut made him one of France's leading comedians. In 2007 TF1 viewers voted him the funniest man of the year, and Papa est en haut sold out seven straight weeks at the Olympia in Paris, a record.

On screen he starred in La Doublure and Priceless, wrote and directed Coco (2009), and is the French voice of Gru in the Despicable Me films. In 2015 he moved to New York to perform in English, and he has made stand-up specials and the series Huge in France for Netflix.
