Idan Raichel turned songs recorded at home with thirty singers into Israel's best-selling album of 2003
Idan Raichel was born in 1977 in Kfar Saba and started on the accordion at nine. After an army band, he worked as a counsellor at a boarding school for young immigrants, most of them from Ethiopia, and began going to Ethiopian clubs in Tel Aviv. Before going out on his own he played keyboards for Ivri Lider and Riki Gal.
In 2002 he released The Idan Raichel Project, songs he had recorded at home with about thirty singers, most of them Ethiopian Israelis, in Hebrew and Amharic. Bo'i and Im Telech went to the top of the charts, and it was the best-selling album in Israel in 2003. The project's first five albums sold more than half a million copies.
Since then he has worked with musicians from around the world, from the Malian guitarist Vieux Farka Touré to India.Arie and Alicia Keys, and has made solo albums alongside the project, the latest, Hed, in 2026. In 2020 he lit a torch at Israel's Independence Day ceremony, and in 2026 he joined The Voice Israel as a mentor.
