Izhar Ashdot composed T-Slam's hits and then produced a European number one for Ofra Haza
Izhar Ashdot was born in Jerusalem in 1958 and began playing guitar at 11. Working as a music editor at the army radio station Galei Tzahal, he met Yair Nitzani, and with Nitzani and Danny Bassan he formed the core of T-Slam, which broke through at the end of 1980 with Radio Hazak. He led the band mainly as composer and arranger, writing the music of Lir'ot Ota HaYom, Tafsik Lechaven Elai and Od Pgisha among others.
After T-Slam broke up in 1983 he worked mainly as a producer and arranger. He produced Adam's debut album Sod (1987), which sold more than 45,000 copies, and with Nitzani the remix of Ofra Haza's Im Nin'alu, which reached number one in most European countries in 1988; Haza's album Shaday, mostly produced by him, sold more than 1.5 million copies. In 1993 he composed the schedule theme of the new Channel 2.
His first solo album, Izhar Ashdot (1992), went gold with Ish HaShokolad, HaLeilot Shelanu and Noa Shel HaYam. Solo and live albums followed, among them Rikud Katan (2008), from a tour of Irish music, and Kach Holech HaRuach (2018), with songs written with Yali Sobol and instrumentals for modular synthesizers. In 2023 he received ACUM's Naomi Shemer lifetime achievement award, and in 2026 he plays with his band at the Zappa clubs in Tel Aviv and Herzliya.
