Si Heiman was born Smadar Heiman at Kibbutz Beit Alfa in 1961. At 13 she won the Gilbozemer song contest with Ten Lanu Lihyot, the first song she wrote and composed. Her breakthrough came in 1985 in Avi Nesher's film Shovrim, where she played Gladys, a young woman who dreams of rock stardom, and sang two duets with Izhar Ashdot. The same year her single Bat Elai became a hit.

On her debut album, Si Heiman VeLehaka Mekomit (1987), she wrote and composed nearly every song, among them Gibor Gadol, Ahavti Otakh Az and Ir Mitnatek'et. HaTaklit HaSheni (1988) was recorded mostly live, and after Ovdim BaKvish (1990) she was named female singer of the year on Reshet Gimel's annual Hebrew chart. Nifgashim (1994) brought Hatzi Olam and Lev Kaze, and in 1995 she came fifth in Israel's Eurovision preselection with BaTelevizia HaLayla and joined the cast of the musical Grease.

Her later albums include Tahlemi BeGadol (2001), Shana MeAkhshav (2009) and HaAlbum HaAsiri (2022). From 2011 she sat on the professional panel of the TV show Beit Sefer LeMusika, and from 2012 she hosted Si HaLayla, a radio show for new Israeli music, first on 88FM and then on Reshet Gimel. Yalda Barzel (2025) has ten songs, most of them written and composed by her, with electric launch shows set for September 2025 in Petah Tikva and Tel Aviv.
