Riki Gal went from the Navy troupe to the front rank of Israeli rock
Riki Gal was born in Jerusalem in 1950 and began singing in 1968 in the Israeli Navy's entertainment troupe, where composer Moshe Wilensky recorded her first song, Mifras Boded. In 1974 Yehonatan Geffen's HaShemesh Hi HaOr Shel HaOlam became a hit and started her solo career, and in 1978 she starred in Ehud Manor and Ken Globus's rock opera Benny Boom.
Her first album, Riki Gal (1987), composed and produced by Matti Caspi, gave her Na'arat HaRock, Hineh Patachti Chalon and Yeled Asur Yeled Mutar. Ma Zot Ahava followed in 1988, and in 1993 Hapes Bi, most of it composed by Yehuda Poliker, with hits such as Hey Shketa and Yesh Li Hulsha LeRakdanim.
On stage she played Fantine in Les Misérables, the title role in Evita and Mama Morton in Chicago, and she was a judge on Kokhav Nolad in 2004 and 2005. She marked 55 years on stage with two concerts at Heichal HaTarbut in Tel Aviv in 2024, and on 1 January 2026 joined pianist Guy Mintus there for a one-off winter show.
