41 King George Street, Jerusalem

A chef restaurant and bar at the top of Independence Park, open since 2000, with white tablecloths, a round bar and a terrace facing the park

Chakra is a chef restaurant and bar on King George Street in the centre of Jerusalem, at the upper edge of Independence Park. It opened in 2000 on Shlomtzion HaMalka Street, founded, as mako told it in 2008, by chef Ilan Garousi with his partners Eran Peretz and Roger Moore, and in the autumn of 2008 it moved to 41 King George Street, a building that, by David Kroyanker's account as Hebrew Wikipedia cites it, had housed Café Rondo, the first café in west Jerusalem to open on Shabbat. Peretz told Walla in 2025 that he arrived as a cook in 2000 and became a partner a few months later, at 24. When Garousi left in 2014 Peretz took over as chef, and for the past decade he has run the restaurant on his own, with his brothers Nir, Lior and Gal working with him. He calls it "a luxury restaurant at eye level": a white tablecloth for everyone, even someone who comes for a hamburger, and a meal for 150 shekels or for 700. Its menu of fish, seafood and meat, printed with the day's date, runs from sourdough bread, ikra and cauliflower msabaha to the spicy tuna on toast that it calls its best seller, cauliflower and mascarpone agnolotti, whole sea bass from the charcoal oven, a cheeseburger, tournedos Rossini and beef cuts from the Iwo butchery; it serves shrimp and seafood but, Peretz told Walla, no pork. An evening there moves between a terrace facing the park, a round bar where Time Out suggests taking a seat to watch the place run like a well-oiled machine, and the dining room inside. By its own account the music turns upbeat late on Thursday evenings, and it opens on Friday and Saturday evenings too, which Peretz sees as keeping a place for Jerusalem's secular public. In October 2025 the World Culinary Awards named it Israel's best restaurant for 2025, at a ceremony on Sardinia, and in November La Liste put it among the world's 1,000 best restaurants for 2026 with 76 points, the only Jerusalem restaurant among the eight from Israel. Haaretz's Eitan Leshem, returning to it in December 2025 in a column on restaurants that became legends, headlined his review "respectful, tasty, pleasant and rare", and Walla's Yaniv Granot put it second on his list of the ten restaurants most worth going to in September 2025. Its pizzeria, Pizza Chakra, opened about 200 metres away in 2024.

Sources disagree on these hours

Its website says it opens from Monday to Saturday at 18:00 and gives no closing time. Its Google listing, as Restaurant Guru and Wanderlog copy it, has it open from 18:00 to midnight on those days and closed on Sunday, and so did its own text in Kol Ha'ir in May 2025. Its booking page on Tabit also says Monday to Saturday from 18:00; an older weekly schedule behind that page, last changed in 2023, opens at 17:30 on Friday and at 12:30 on Saturday. Its listing on d.co.il gives daytime hours that are not the restaurant's.
