1 KKL Boulevard, Mitzpe Ramon

An eco-lodge of earth-and-canvas cabins on the hills between Mitzpe Ramon and the crater cliff, hosting travellers since 1990, with a boutique winery of its own.

Desert Shade is a lodge on the small hills between Mitzpe Ramon and the cliff of the Makhtesh Ramon crater, looking straight onto the crater and the Negev Highlands. It began in 1990, when Ziv Spector, then a Tel Aviv entrepreneur, came to the town looking for a place to connect travellers with the desert, and by its own account it has done so for more than 30 years. Guests sleep in 25 air-conditioned ohalogs, cabins of smart fabric and earth walls built of local soil, stone and recycled materials, for couples, families and groups. There are a stone gallery with big windows onto the crater, where breakfast is served, terraces for the sunrise and the stars, a Bedouin tent of goat hair, campfire corners and a studio for yoga, workshops and retreats, and a few steps from the gate the sculpture park along the cliff. Its small boutique winery, Nabato, makes wine at the farm.
