The Pozailov family's first Bukharan restaurant, opened in Or Yehuda in 1995: lamb skewers, dumplings, soups and oshpalov, kosher and closed on Shabbat.
By its site, Samarkand was the first restaurant in Israel to bring Bukharan hospitality to the Israeli public. Eliyahu Pozailov, who had been a chef in a restaurant in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, founded it in 1995 and drew his sons, and in time his grandchildren, into the business, and the family's grandmother oversees the kitchen. The menu runs from lamb skewers and filled pastries to soups, dumplings, bakhsh rice and oshpalov, and long tables opening at lunchtime and in the evening are an everyday sight. The Or Yehuda restaurant has a private room for up to 30 diners, sells ready food for Shabbat and does takeaway and deliveries midweek. It is the first of the family's two restaurants; the second is in Tel Aviv. Mako's 2025 guide to Or Yehuda praised its dumplings and pastries and told readers not to miss the rolled fillet skewer.
