Avi Toledano went from a kibbutz in the Negev to singer of the year in 1969

Avi Toledano was born in Meknes, Morocco, in 1948 and moved to Israel at 16, settling at Kibbutz Ruhama in the Negev. He was first heard on the radio show Tsuot Rishonot, where composer Moshe Wilensky noticed him and gave him Zohi Yafo, the song that made his name before he joined the army. He served in the Armored Corps troupe and released his first solo album in 1968.

In 1969 he took third place at the Israel Song Festival with BaDerech Chazara and was named singer of the year on Kol Israel's annual Hebrew chart. A year later he won the first Children's Song Festival with Lama Kacha, sung with ten-year-old Irit Anavi, and in 1978 he toured with La Bohème, an evening of Charles Aznavour's songs in Hebrew whose premiere Aznavour attended.

In 1982 he won Israel's pre-Eurovision with Hora, which he composed to words by Yoram Taharlev, and finished second at the Eurovision Song Contest. The next year he composed Chai, which Ofra Haza also took to second place. He has since recorded an album of his own melodies to Hanoch Levin's songs, played Amran Asayag in the TV series The Eighties, and in 2025 released Tachana 77, writing and composing every song on it except the words of one, Avigail.
