Dori Ben Ze'ev brought a loose new style to Israeli radio in 1970 and had hit songs by 1977
Dori Ben Ze'ev was born in Tel Aviv in 1949 and grew up in Haifa. In the army he served in the IDF Theatre and the Armored Corps band, then moved to Galei Tzahal, where in 1970 he started a weekly request show in a loose, playful style that was new to Israeli radio, ending each show with Bob Dylan's If Dogs Run Free. In those years he wrote songs and sketches, took part in Lul, including its famous Bible Quiz sketch, and did stand-up before it was common in Israel.
His first album, HaKivun Ma'arav (1975), came out with jazz arrangements by Alona Turel, and members of the band Tamouz, Shalom Hanoch among them, played on it. Limonada (1977) gave him the hits Ve'atem Rokdim and Lemon Tree and made him one of the best-known singers in Israel. In 1982 his John Bryan, a Hebrew version of Big Bad John, was the hit of the TV show Emek HaNahar HaAdom, and Ganavim (1985) and Chanaya Pratit (1991), with Sof Shavua BaKfar and Leah Ganuv, followed.
He went on broadcasting: Dori BaAvir on Channel 2 in 1993, Tremp on 88FM and Radio 99, and since 2012 Ben Ze'ev LeSof Shavua on 88FM. He produced Meir Ariel's posthumous album Mode Ani (2000), has performed Ein Alayich Achoti with the linguist Ruvik Rosenthal since 2004, a show of songs, monologues and stand-up about everyday Hebrew, released Mitachat LaKova in 2010 and won the Landau Prize for the Arts in 2016.
