Itzik Kala was learning to play with a paytan in Jerusalem at the age of ten

Itzik Kala was born in Jerusalem in 1953 to a family of Kurdish Jewish origin. At ten he began learning mandolin, guitar, oud and bouzouki with the paytan Rachamim Amar, and at 18 he became the lead singer of the band Or Chaim, before going on to perform with his own musicians at events and clubs.

His first album, Al Harei HaKastel (1978), was a record of Kurdish songs, and about 30 more followed. Mami Mami (1985), Ani HaEved (1988) and Ani Kore BeShmech (1997), recorded in Greece, made him one of the leading names in Mediterranean music.

From 2000 he worked with the Jerusalem arranger Tomer Ajam: Shmor Aleinu gave him the wedding anthem Yismach Chatani, and Tavini Oti (2003) included Aba Neshama, the song most identified with him. In August 2009 he sold out the Caesarea amphitheatre, and in 2026 he counted 33 albums and more than 55 years on stage.
