Sassi Keshet went from the Nahal army band to teen idol to a star of Israeli musicals
Sassi Keshet was born Sason Kosovski and grew up on Kibbutz Glil Yam. In the mid-1960s he was one of the stars of the Nahal army band, and after his service he became a solo singer seen as a teen idol, and sang with the Dizengoff Command entertainment band in 1969 and 1970.
His debut album, Sassi Keshet (1971), went gold, with hits such as VeTavo Aleichem HaBracha, HaLaila HaAroch Beyoter BaOlam and Pinkas HaKatan, the song most identified with him. That year he came second at the Israel Song Festival and was named singer of the year in Kol Israel's annual chart. He won the Hasidic Song Festival with Sisu VeSimchu, and in 1974 the Children's Song Festival with Shovav Im Lev Zahav.
On stage he is best known as a star of musicals, from Evita and The Sound of Music, as Captain von Trapp, to Chicago and Les Misérables, and he has dubbed films and cartoons in Hebrew. He became the Yiddishpiel theatre's CEO and artistic director in December 2011 and has stayed on as artistic director since 2016, and his current shows include Mi Shelo Yavo Chaval!, with Orna Datz and Tuvia Tzafir.
