Pingwin has made ice cream in the heart of Kfar Saba since 1951. Its site tells how a young couple in Europe loved a black-and-white ice lolly called Penguin and promised each other to open an ice cream parlour of that name when they came to Israel; they opened it in Kfar Saba, and the family began with a machine brought back from Italy. It says it still keeps to the flavours it opened with, such as chocolate, vanilla, mastic and mango sorbet, beside vegan, pareve and no-sugar-added ice creams, uses no preservatives and fresh fruit every day, and sells 350 to 400 kilos a day in summer; its customers' favourite combination, it says, is chocolate, cookies, banana and rum raisin. The Rothschild Street shop is the one its site calls legendary; a second Kfar Saba branch is on HaTa'as Street, and others are in Ra'anana and Hod HaSharon.
