People ask these questions about percentages.

How do I work out a percentage of a number?+

Divide the percent by 100 and multiply by the number. For example, 15% of 200 is 30: 15 divided by 100 is 0.15, and 0.15 times 200 is 30.

How do I work out a discount?+

Work out the percent of the price and take it off. For 15% off ₪199, the saving is ₪29.85 and the price is ₪169.15. To find the discount from an old price to a new one, use the percent change: from ₪250 to ₪200 is 20% off.

How do I work out a percent change?+

Take the old number from the new one, divide by the old number and multiply by 100. From 80 to 100 is an increase of 25%. From 100 back to 80 is a decrease of 20%, not 25%, because the change is always measured from the number you start with.

What is the difference between percent and percentage points?+

A percent is a share of a number, and percentage points are the gap between two percentages. If a rate goes from 4% to 6%, it has gone up 2 percentage points, which is an increase of 50%.

How do I add a percent to a number?+

Work out the percent of the number and add it. To add 10% to ₪300, 10% of ₪300 is ₪30, so the total is ₪330. A shortcut is to multiply by 1 plus the percent divided by 100, which here is ₪300 times 1.1.
