A man and a woman were wounded in a shooting on Herzl Street in the northern Israeli city of Haifa on the evening of the incident, according to Israeli emergency services and media. Magen David Adom said its 101 emergency line in the Carmel region received a call at 23:00 about two people hurt in a violent incident on the street. Its medics and paramedics treated the pair at the scene and took them to Rambam hospital: a man aged 35 in serious condition and a woman aged 34 in moderate condition, both with penetrating injuries.
N12 reported that police had opened an investigation and had said the background to the shooting was probably criminal. In a later update, N12 confirmed the ages of the two wounded and said both had been taken to Rambam with penetrating wounds. Ynet also reported that one person had been seriously hurt in a shooting in Haifa and that police were investigating.
Conflicting accounts of how badly the two were hurt
The reports do not fully agree on the severity of the injuries. Magen David Adom, N12 and Ynet described one of the wounded, the man, as seriously hurt. News.co.il, in its early report, said one of the two was moderately hurt and the other lightly, and repeated that description in a second post a few minutes later. Magen David Adom, as the service that treated and evacuated the casualties, gave the more detailed account: the man in serious condition and the woman in moderate condition. Hospital updates on their condition have not been reported.
There is also a difference in wording on what happened. Magen David Adom's statement referred to a violent incident rather than specifically to gunfire, while N12, Ynet and News.co.il all described it as a shooting. The emergency service said only that the injuries were penetrating, a medical term that covers wounds from bullets as well as from blades or other objects.
Who responded
Magen David Adom, often shortened to MDA, is Israel's national emergency medical and ambulance service, the country's equivalent of a combined ambulance and paramedic network. Members of the public reach it by dialling 101, and it organises its operations by region; Haifa falls within its Carmel region, named after Mount Carmel, on whose slopes much of the city is built. MDA routinely issues short statements through its spokesperson's office giving the time a call was received, the number of casualties, their ages and their condition.

Rambam is the main hospital in Haifa and one of the largest medical centres in northern Israel, receiving many of the region's trauma cases.
Where it happened
Haifa is a port city on Israel's Mediterranean coast and the largest urban centre in the north of the country, with a mixed Jewish and Arab population. Herzl Street, named after Theodor Herzl, the founder of modern political Zionism, is one of several streets bearing his name in Israeli cities. The reports did not specify which part of the street the shooting took place on.

What a 'criminal background' means
When Israeli police say an incident has a criminal background, using the Hebrew phrase reka plili, they generally mean they believe it is linked to crime, such as disputes between individuals or criminal groups, rather than to terrorism or a nationalist motive. The distinction matters in Israel because it determines which authorities lead the investigation and how the incident is classified. In this case the police assessment, as reported by N12 and News.co.il, was that the background was likely criminal; N12 quoted the police as saying it was probably so, rather than certain.
Shootings with a suspected criminal background are a recurring feature of Israeli crime reporting, and the police routinely open investigations into them. None of the reports linked this incident to any wider dispute or to other recent events.
What the reports do not say
None of the reports names the wounded, says whether the two knew each other, or explains what relationship, if any, the attackers had to them. No arrests or suspects have been reported, and police have not said how many shooters were involved, whether a weapon was recovered, or what evidence underlies their assessment of a criminal motive. The discrepancy between News.co.il's description of the injuries and that of MDA and N12 has not been resolved by any later update.

How we checked this
The incident was reported by Magen David Adom, N12, Ynet and News.co.il; the ages, the 23:00 call time and the hospital come from MDA and N12. The police assessment of a likely criminal motive was reported by N12 and News.co.il, and accounts of injury severity differ between outlets.
