A Veteran Lawyer Is Israel's Pick for Ambassador to Athens

Israel's foreign minister, Gideon Sa'ar, nominated the attorney Pnina Yanai as the country's ambassador to Greece, according to the announcement issued from Jerusalem on 15 October 2025. In his letter, Sa'ar said the intention to appoint her stemmed from a range of considerations relating to her abilities and skills, among them her interpersonal skills, her ability to appear before audiences and the media, and her ability to express herself, which he described as an essential dimension for the success of Israeli ambassadors at this time.

The announcement described Yanai as a well-known and veteran lawyer and jurist with extensive and varied managerial, media and public relations experience. It gave no further biographical detail.

The road from nomination to embassy

A nomination by the foreign minister is a first step rather than a final one. Candidates for ambassador and consul-general posts are screened by the Ministerial Committee for Foreign Service Appointments before the appointment goes to the government for approval, according to The Jerusalem Post. The same report notes that Israel's attorney general applies tighter scrutiny to senior appointments as an election approaches, and that outside political nominees face tougher review than career diplomats who have come through the ministry's own professional track. A Times of Israel item on other ambassadorial picks by Sa'ar likewise records that names are submitted for government approval after the minister selects them.

Why Athens matters more than it used to

Greece has moved from a peripheral relationship to one of Israel's closer partners in Europe. Bilateral trade rose 41.3 per cent in 2024 over the previous year, from $920 million to $1.3 billion, with Israeli exports of chemicals and metals and imports of base metals and machinery, according to a February 2025 analysis by the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies at Bar-Ilan University. The same analysis describes talks on a $2.11 billion Greek air and missile defence system modelled on Israel's Iron Dome, a reported Greek plan to buy rocket launchers from the Israeli firm Elbit, and an energy cooperation agreement signed in December 2024, alongside Israeli interest in the Great Sea Interconnector, a planned undersea electricity cable running from Israel to Cyprus and on to Greece.

The political architecture has kept pace. Israel, Greece and Cyprus held a trilateral summit in Jerusalem on 22 December 2025 at which the three leaders agreed to deepen defence cooperation and to advance the interconnector and the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, The Jerusalem Post reported. In January 2026 the Greek defence minister, Nikos Dendias, announced an agreement with his Israeli counterpart to cooperate on countering drones (particularly swarms of unmanned aircraft) and on cyber defence, according to the Post.

What the announcement did not say

The statement did not say when Yanai would take up the post, whether the ministerial committee or the government had yet approved the nomination, or who she would be replacing. It gave no account of her legal career, no previous diplomatic experience and no indication of whether she had served in the Foreign Ministry before.
