Mordechai Ben David opened for another band at Brooklyn College in 1972 and went on to sell more than a million albums
Mordechai Ben David, the stage name of Mordechai Werdyger, was born in Brooklyn in 1951. He gave his first concert in 1972, opening for the group Ohr Chadash at Brooklyn College, and released his first album, Sings Original Chassidic Nigunim, in 1973. With Hineni (1974) he found the sound that became his trademark.
From the 1970s to the 1990s he released many Hasidic rock hits, mixing traditional Hasidic melodies with jazz, pop and rock, in Hebrew, Yiddish and English. In 1981 he and the producer Sheya Mendlowitz made Avraham Fried's first solo album, and together they produced a run of hit albums of his own, among them MBD and Friends (1987). By 2004 his albums had sold more than a million copies.
He has headlined charity concerts, above all those of HASC and Ohel, and performs often in Israel. Tzeaka came out in 2017 and Hashpuois in 2022, in 2020 he began hosting a Friday radio show on Kol Chai, and in 2025 he released Chaverim, a single he composed himself. In the summer of 2026 he toured four Israeli cities, opening with a sold-out show for about 6,500 people at the Sultan's Pool in Jerusalem.
