A visitor center in Lod built around a rare Roman mosaic floor found in the city in 1996

In 1996 a rare mosaic was found by surprise in Lod, in a rescue excavation ahead of the widening of HaHalutz Street that the municipality had planned. Dated to the Roman period, the end of the 3rd or the start of the 4th century CE, it is about 17 metres long and 9 metres wide, made of colourful carpets that show animals, plants and ships in great detail, and its site says it is one of the most impressive and complete mosaics found anywhere. Since it was uncovered it has been shown at museums in Israel and abroad, among them the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Louvre in Paris, the Altes Museum in Berlin and the Hermitage in St Petersburg. It is now shown in a new 1,300 square metre visitor center, set up by the Lod economic company with the Israel Antiquities Authority, the Lod municipality and the donors Shelby White and Leon Levy, for whom it is named, inside a public garden called the Mosaic Garden, with interactive activities for visitors of all ages.
