Somek is a family winery in the middle of Zichron Yaakov, at 16 Herzl Street, founded in 2002 by Barak and Hila Dahan. Barak is the fifth generation of growers in the town, and by the winery's account the family has worked the same vineyards in the Hanadiv valley, below the town, since 1882; Hila studied agriculture at the Hebrew University and took a master's in winemaking at the University of Adelaide. The vineyards grow Carignan, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Petit Verdot for its reds and Chardonnay, Roussanne, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Viognier for its whites, and its bottles run from a rosé at 105 shekels to a numbered limited edition of Carignan. Visits are by arrangement: guided tastings, a look at the barrel rooms, private events and team days, for up to 20 guests in the tasting room or up to 50 in the winery's courtyard, with food from local producers.
