Shlomi Shabat's first album failed before Biglal HaRuach made him a star in 1989
Shlomi Shabat was born in 1954 and grew up in Yehud. He started out singing in clubs in New York, where he found his way to Mizrahi music. His first album, Min HaChoshech Chazarti, failed, and his breakthrough came in 1989 with the hit Biglal HaRuach, lyrics by Micha Shitrit, and the album of the same name, produced by Moshe Ben Mosh, which made him one of the biggest music stars in Israel.
In 1990 he came second at the Festigal with Bizchut HaSalsa, and in 1991 he sang MiKan in the Israeli Eurovision preselection and released Al Telchi Rachok Midai. His comeback came in 2000 with Lechol Echad Yesh, a duet with Lior Narkis that he composed to words by Uzi Hitman, chosen song of the year on Reshet Gimel's annual Hebrew chart. His duets album Chaverim (2001) sold more than 200,000 copies, and Shetedi was the most played song on Israeli radio in 2010.
From 2012 to 2019 he was a mentor on The Voice Israel. In 2021 he lit a torch at the Independence Day ceremony, in 2024 he published his autobiography, Ani Amut Al HaBama, written with Yaniv Magal, and in 2025 his single Drishat Shalom reached number one on the Media Forest chart and he received ACUM's Naomi Shemer award for lifetime achievement. In January 2026 he and Pablo Rosenberg opened their third tour together at Expo Tel Aviv.
