The Babylonian Jewry Heritage Center was set up in 1973 to preserve the history of the Jewish community of Iraq and keep it part of the Jewish people's story, through research, preservation and publication of the culture and folklore of Iraqi Jews. The idea came from Mordechai Ben-Porat, after the Or Yehuda council set aside plots for heritage centres of the communities, and the centre's building in Or Yehuda was completed in 1980. Its Museum of Babylonian Jewry opened at Passover 1988 and presents chapters from more than 2,600 years of the Jews of Babylon, in permanent and changing exhibitions over two floors, among them a new permanent exhibition, The End of an Exile. The centre also holds a library, an archive of Iraqi Jewry and digital databases, and runs guided tours, an audio guide in three languages, gallery talks and workshops.
