The Negev Museum of Art is housed in the Ottoman Governor's House, built in 1906 as one of a group of government buildings beside the Great Mosque, which is now the Museum of Islamic and Near Eastern Cultures. The Negev Museum opened in the early 1950s as an archaeology museum in the mosque; the Governor's House, after serving as the first city hall and a welfare office, became its art wing in 1987, was restored between 1999 and 2003 and reopened as the Negev Museum of Art in January 2004. Its site says its exhibitions bring leading Israeli artists to the Negev and give a place to artists living in the region, and its collection of Israeli art grew by close to 200 works through gifts of collections, artists and estates. Since January 2011 it has been run by Kivunim, the Beer Sheva municipality's company for culture and leisure. Beside the exhibitions it runs education programmes, creative workshops for all ages in the holidays and summer holidays, and in summer it hosts city events and music on its lawn.
