Beer Sheva's centre for the art of photography, with a camera museum and a photography gallery in a restored building of 1934

Tzalmania, the International Center for Photographic Arts, is run by Kivunim, Beer Sheva's municipal company for culture and leisure, in a building of 1934 that served as a school for the children of the city's Christian community and later the Civil Guard. It was set up on the initiative of its curator and founder Goel Drori, with the municipality and Mifal HaPais, and after restoration under strict conservation rules it opened on 11 September 2022. The lower floor holds a visitor centre with a camera museum, a photography gallery, a patio and a courtyard; the camera museum's permanent display follows the history of photography from the large, heavy cameras of the 19th century to the film cameras of the 20th, with collections given by photography lovers from around the world, shown in a dark room where each camera is lit by a spotlight. The gallery hosts changing exhibitions by local and national photographers, and the upper floor holds a classroom, a photo studio, the city's photo archive and an institute for research into Beer Sheva's heritage.
