An open-air museum on the edge of old Nazareth that recreates a Galilee village of the first century, on farmland with a 2,000-year-old wine press

Nazareth Village opened in 2000 on a 6-hectare hillside that stayed untouched on the grounds of the Nazareth Hospital, set up in 1906 by what is now the Nazareth Trust, which runs the village as a not-for-profit. Excavations there found a 2,000-year-old wine press cut into the bedrock, with the remains of a vineyard, watchtowers, terraces, a spring-fed irrigation system and stone quarries. The terraces were restored, and replicas of first-century houses, a synagogue, a watchtower, a mikveh and olive presses were built with the original methods and materials. Guides lead visitors through the farm and houses while villagers in period dress work at their trades, among them a carpenter and a weaver; the standard tour takes about 1 hour 15 minutes in English, and its site offers biblical meals as well.
