The idea

What is gematria?

Gematria assigns numerical values to Hebrew letters, so words and phrases have totals that can be compared. It appears throughout rabbinic literature, Kabbalah and Torah commentary: two words sharing a value are read as connected in meaning.

The best-known example: חי (chai, "life") equals 18, which is why gifts and charity are often given in multiples of 18.

The standard method (Mispar Hechrachi) runs א=1 through י=10, then by tens to ק=100 and by hundreds to ת=400. Ordinal counts letter positions, reduced collapses to single digits, and Atbash mirrors the alphabet.

The methods

Four ways to add up the same word

They are not competing answers. Each one belongs to a different interpretive tradition, and a commentary will normally say which it is using.

Mispar Hechrachi

Standard

א=1 up to י=10, then by tens to ק=100 and by hundreds to ת=400. This is what a rabbinic source means by gematria unless it says otherwise.

Mispar Siduri

Ordinal

Each letter counts its place in the alphabet, so א=1 and ת=22. Totals come out far smaller than the standard method, which is the point: it puts long words within reach of short ones.

Mispar Katan

Reduced

Every letter collapses to a single digit, so ת=400 becomes 4 and ל=30 becomes 3. Used to link words whose standard totals are nowhere near each other.

The mirrored alphabet

Atbash

The alphabet is reversed before counting: א swaps with ת, ב with ש. Jeremiah 25:26 uses it, writing Sheshach where he means Bavel.

Worked out

Two words, letter by letter

This is the whole arithmetic. Add the standard value of each letter, and that total is the word's gematria.

חי

chai: life

ח8י10

8 + 10 = 18

The reason wedding cheques and charity gifts come in multiples of 18.

שלום

shalom: peace, and also hello and goodbye

ש300ל30ו6ם40

300 + 30 + 6 + 40 = 376

The word the calculator above starts on, so you can check it against the standard column.

Every letter and its standard value

Ones, then tens, then hundreds. Hebrew had no separate numerals, so these letters were the numbers, and gematria is what falls out of that.

Frequently asked questions

What is the gematria of chai (חי)?+

Chai, the Hebrew word for life, has a standard gematria of 18: chet (8) plus yud (10). This is why Jewish gifts and donations are traditionally given in multiples of 18.

Which gematria method should I use?+

The standard method (Mispar Hechrachi, א=1 through ת=400) is what rabbinic sources almost always mean by gematria. The other methods (ordinal, reduced, Atbash) are used for specific interpretive traditions.

Do final letters have different values?+

In the standard method, final forms (ך ם ן ף ץ) carry the same value as their regular forms. Some variant systems assign them 500 to 900, but that is a separate method (Mispar Gadol).

Does English have gematria?+

English has no traditional gematria, but two popular conventions exist: ordinal (a=1 to z=26) and the Sumerian method (a=6 to z=156). This calculator shows both for English text.
