The British Mandate's central prison in the Russian Compound, restored by the Ministry of Defense as a museum of the Jewish underground prisoners held there

The museum is in the Russian Compound, which the Russians built by the Old City in the 1860s to house Christian pilgrims; the building was its women's hostel. Under British rule, from 1917 to 1948, the compound became a British government and security centre and the building its central prison, and the compound was taken on 14 May 1948. From 1965 the association of former Hagana, Irgun and Lehi prisoners ran a Hall of Heroism in the building, and in 1991 it passed to the Ministry of Defense's museums unit, which restored the prison as a heritage site that, its pages say, tells its story through the stories of the prisoners. Visitors walk the main corridors, the display rooms and the courtyards, and the route includes the solitary cells and the gallows room; a computer station in the reception room enlarges pictures of the route and the exhibits, and the main presentation's films are signed for deaf visitors.
