The Haifa Museum of Art began in 1951 in a wing of the Haifa municipality, founded for a large exhibition of the work of Marc Chagall, and in 1977 it moved to its present home: a three-storey stone building of about 3,500 square metres, built in the 1920s as an Anglican girls' school and now a listed building. Its site says it is the largest museum in the north and one of the three largest art museums in Israel, and that its collection of more than 9,000 works includes Israeli artists such as Reuven Rubin and Nahum Gutman, while works on paper by Chagall, Goya, Picasso, Käthe Kollwitz and Odilon Redon make up about a third of it. It also collects video art, with a media archive reaching back to the 1960s, and shows solo, group and collection exhibitions. Its education department runs interactive exhibitions and a gallery for the whole family, where visitors of every age make work inspired by what they have seen.
