A museum of the sea and of seafaring on Allenby Road, beside Tel Shikmona, that tells 5,000 years of shipping in the Mediterranean and the story of Israeli shipping.

The National Maritime Museum has its roots in a museum that the Israel Maritime League set up before the state, in the seafarers' house in Haifa's lower city; in 1954 the city and the league bought the navy's maritime collection for one symbolic Israeli lira, and in 1973 the museum moved to its present building on Allenby Road, put up by the city with a donation from the Morrison fund of London. Its site says it is the only museum in Israel to show the history of seafaring in the Mediterranean in full, and its collection of more than 10,000 items has included the collection of the Museum of Ancient Art since 1995, beside finds from underwater excavations that belong to the Israel Antiquities Authority. The permanent exhibitions tell 5,000 years of people and the sea through ship models, maritime trade, ancient anchors, navigation instruments and the worship of sea gods, with the ram of an ancient warship as their highlight, and others cover Tel Shikmona and Israeli shipping. For children there is the exhibition "Pirates: Between Truth and Legend", a play space called Young Sailors and an activity yard, and the museum holds a Sea Day festival every year.
