Israel's national museum of science, technology and space, in the historic first Technion building in Hadar HaCarmel, with hands-on exhibitions, a science park and a space wing.

Madatech, the National Museum of Science, Technology and Space, is housed in the first Technion building, whose cornerstone was laid in 1912 and which opened in 1924; its site says the architect Alexander Baerwald designed it as a blend of symmetrical European monumental building and local Arab building. The museum grew from a first public science exhibition that a group of Technion professors opened in 1983, took over the historic building when the Technion moved out in 1984, and with a donation from the Recanati family became Israel's national science museum in 1985. Its site calls it the largest science museum in Israel, with more than 20 exhibitions, a large science park opened in 2011, laboratories, visiting exhibitions from abroad and an area for young children, among them the Space Wing, an observatory, a Nobel gallery and an innovation centre, and a historic collection of 4,856 scientific and technological items. It suggests about three hours for a visit, runs guided tours of the Space Wing and the robots display several times a day on weekdays, and has two cafés open on Saturdays and holidays; eating is allowed in the science park but not inside the buildings.
