Israel's first aquarium, on the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo's extension in Malha, showing the marine habitats of the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea

The Gottesman Family Israel Aquarium in Jerusalem is, its site says, the first aquarium in Israel, and its subject is the conservation of Israel's marine habitats and environment. A one-way route leads through the habitats of the Mediterranean, from the shallow shore to the open sea, on to the colourful fish and corals of the Red Sea, and even to the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea. It was built under the lead of the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo, on land added to the zoo in 2008, with the Gottesman family of New York, donors from Israel and abroad, the Jerusalem municipality and the Ministry of Tourism; building began in August 2013 and took four years. Its site says it was planned to complement a visit to the zoo, open in any weather and after dark, and its staff of about 20 includes divers who help care for the tanks.
