What happens in Bamidbar
In the second year in the desert God tells Moses to count the men of Israel old enough to serve, tribe by tribe. The portion sets out where each tribe camps around the Tabernacle and in what order they travel. The Levites are counted apart and take the place of the firstborn, and the families of Kohath are told how to carry the holiest vessels when the camp moves.
וַיְדַבֵּר ה׳ אֶל־מֹשֶׁה בְּמִדְבַּר סִינַי בְּאֹהֶל מוֹעֵד בְּאֶחָד לַחֹדֶשׁ הַשֵּׁנִי בַּשָּׁנָה הַשֵּׁנִית לְצֵאתָם מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם לֵאמֹר
“And the LORD spoke unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt, saying:”
