What happens in Shemot

A new Pharaoh enslaves the Israelites in Egypt and decrees against their newborn sons. Moses is hidden by his mother, found in the Nile by Pharaoh's daughter and raised in the palace. Grown up, he flees to Midian, marries Zipporah and tends sheep. At the burning bush God sends him to bring the people out. Moses and Aaron go to Pharaoh, who refuses and makes the work harder.

וְאֵלֶּה שְׁמוֹת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל הַבָּאִים מִצְרָיְמָה אֵת יַעֲקֹב אִישׁ וּבֵיתוֹ בָּאוּ

“Now these are the names of the sons of Israel, who came into Egypt with Jacob; every man came with his household:”

Exodus 1:1, the opening verse, in the 1917 Jewish Publication Society translation.
