What happens in Mishpatim

After the Ten Commandments comes a long run of civil and ritual law: Hebrew servants, damages, loans and lost property, care for the stranger, the widow and the orphan, honest courts, the sabbatical year and the three pilgrim festivals. The people pledge to keep it all, the covenant is sealed, and Moses goes up the mountain for forty days and forty nights.

וְאֵלֶּה הַמִּשְׁפָּטִים אֲשֶׁר תָּשִׂים לִפְנֵיהֶם

“Now these are the ordinances which thou shalt set before them.”

Exodus 21:1, the opening verse, in the 1917 Jewish Publication Society translation.
