In Israel and abroad

In 2027 the Diaspora reads Korach a week after Israel. The second day of Shavuot is on Shabbat, 12 June 2027: that day the Diaspora reads the festival's own portion, while Israel, where the festival has already ended, goes on to the next portion. The two read the same portion again from 17 July 2027, when the Diaspora reads Chukat and Balak together.

What happens in Korach

Korach, a Levite, joined by Dathan, Abiram and 250 leaders, challenges the leadership of Moses and Aaron. Moses proposes a test of incense before God, and the rebellion is put down. To settle who is chosen, a staff from each tribe is laid in the Tabernacle, and Aaron's staff blossoms and bears almonds. The portion closes with the duties of the priests and Levites and the gifts given to them.

“Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men;”

Numbers 16:1, the opening verse, in the 1917 Jewish Publication Society translation.
