What happens in Eikev

Moses promises blessing if the people keep the commandments and reminds them of the manna, which taught that a person does not live by bread alone. He warns against forgetting God in times of plenty and against thinking the land was won by their own righteousness, and recalls the golden calf and the second tablets. Here are the command to bless God after eating and the second paragraph of the Shema.

“And it shall come to pass, because ye hearken to these ordinances, and keep, and do them, that the LORD thy God shall keep with thee the covenant and the mercy which He swore unto thy fathers,”

Deuteronomy 7:12, the opening verse, in the 1917 Jewish Publication Society translation.
