What happens in Emor

The portion gives laws for the priests: whom they may marry, when they may become impure for the dead, and which blemishes keep a priest or an offering from the altar. It then lists the festivals: Shabbat, Passover, the counting of the Omer, Shavuot, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Sukkot with its four species. It closes with the oil for the menorah, the showbread, and the case of a man who cursed God's name.

“And the LORD said unto Moses: Speak unto the priests the sons of Aaron, and say unto them: There shall none defile himself for the dead among his people;”

Leviticus 21:1, the opening verse, in the 1917 Jewish Publication Society translation.
