What happens in Bereshit

The Torah opens with the creation of the world in six days and the rest of the seventh. Adam and Eve are placed in the Garden of Eden, eat from the tree of knowledge and are sent out. Their sons Cain and Abel follow, then the generations from Adam to Noah, as people grow corrupt and God resolves to bring a flood, while Noah finds favour.

בְּרֵאשִׁית בָּרָא אֱלֹקִים אֵת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְאֵת הָאָרֶץ

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”

Genesis 1:1, the opening verse, in the 1917 Jewish Publication Society translation.
