In Israel and abroad

In 2027 the Diaspora reads Sh'lach a week after Israel. The second day of Shavuot is on Shabbat, 12 June 2027: that day the Diaspora reads the festival's own portion, while Israel, where the festival has already ended, goes on to the next portion. The two read the same portion again from 17 July 2027, when the Diaspora reads Chukat and Balak together.

What happens in Sh'lach

Moses sends twelve scouts to explore Canaan. They come back after forty days with huge fruit, and ten of them say the land cannot be taken; only Joshua and Caleb disagree. The people weep and want to go back to Egypt, and God decrees that they will wander forty years until a new generation enters the land. The portion closes with laws of offerings, challah and the tzitzit on the corners of a garment.

“Send thou men, that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel; of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, every one a prince among them.”

Numbers 13:2, the verse after the portion's opening line, in the 1917 Jewish Publication Society translation.
