What happens in Tazria

The portion opens with the laws of purity after childbirth and the offering a mother brings, and the command of circumcision on the eighth day. Most of it deals with tzara'at, a skin affliction often called leprosy: how a priest examines it, the days of quarantine, and how he decides whether a person, or a garment showing such a mark, is pure or impure.

“Speak unto the children of Israel, saying: If a woman be delivered, and bear a man-child, then she shall be unclean seven days; as in the days of the impurity of her sickness shall she be unclean.”

Leviticus 12:2, the verse after the portion's opening line, in the 1917 Jewish Publication Society translation.

What is Parashat Tazria about?+

Why is Tazria sometimes read together with Metzora?+

Most years have fewer free Shabbatot than portions: a festival that falls on Shabbat takes that Shabbat's reading, and a year without a second month of Adar is about four weeks shorter. So some neighbouring portions are read together, and Tazria with Metzora is one of those pairs.
