What happens in Vaetchanan

Moses tells how he pleaded to enter the land and was refused: he may only see it from the mountain top. He urges the people to keep the laws without adding or taking away, sets apart three cities of refuge east of the Jordan and repeats the Ten Commandments. Here is the Shema, the command to love God with all your heart, and the duty to teach your children. It is read on the Shabbat after Tisha B'Av, Shabbat Nachamu.

וָאֶתְחַנַּן אֶל־ה׳ בָּעֵת הַהִוא לֵאמֹר

“And I besought the LORD at that time, saying:”

Deuteronomy 3:23, the opening verse, in the 1917 Jewish Publication Society translation.
