What happens in Ki Tisa

The portion opens with the half-shekel census, the washing basin, the anointing oil and the incense, and names Bezalel as the craftsman of the Tabernacle. While Moses is on the mountain, the people make a golden calf. Moses breaks the tablets, pleads for the people and asks to see God's glory. He carves new tablets, hears the thirteen attributes of mercy and comes down with his face shining.

“When thou takest the sum of the children of Israel, according to their number, then shall they give every man a ransom for his soul unto the LORD, when thou numberest them; that there be no plague among them, when thou numberest them.”

Exodus 30:12, the verse after the portion's opening line, in the 1917 Jewish Publication Society translation.
