What happens in Beshalach

Pharaoh changes his mind and chases the Israelites to the sea, which splits for them and closes over the Egyptian army. Moses and the people sing the Song of the Sea, and Miriam leads the women in song. In the desert the people complain of thirst and hunger: bitter water is made sweet, manna falls six days a week with a double portion before Shabbat, and water flows from a rock. Amalek attacks and is beaten back.

“And it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led them not by the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said: 'Lest the people regret when they see war, and they return to Egypt.”

Exodus 13:17, the opening verse, in the 1917 Jewish Publication Society translation.
