What happens in Pinchas

Pinchas is given a covenant of peace and the priesthood for his descendants. A new census is taken before the people enter the land, and the land is to be divided by lot. The daughters of Zelophehad ask for their father's share, and God says they are right. Joshua is named to lead after Moses. The portion closes with the offerings for every day, Shabbat, the new moon and each festival.

“Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned My wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was very jealous for My sake among them, so that I consumed not the children of Israel in My jealousy.”

Numbers 25:11, the verse after the portion's opening line, in the 1917 Jewish Publication Society translation.
